Established as a military garrison for Spain in 1706, Albuquerque has become the largest city in New Mexico. Parts of the 1700’s plaza still exists today in “Old Town.” Its population of over half a million people within the city limits makes Albuquerque the 32nd largest city in the United States as of 2012. When including the surrounding areas, the population approaches one million. With a national forest and soaring mountains to the east; a military base and Isleta Reservation to the south; and the Sandia Reservation to the north; Albuquerque real estate has been a great investment for most of its history. After World War II, historic Route 66 and Sandia Laboratories brought thousands to this fair city. The NE Heights is the largest area in the city and is the most populous. But the West Side and Rio Rancho are the fastest growing areas of town since this is where most of the available land is located.
