Established as a military garrison for Spain in 1706, Albuquerque has become the largest city in New Mexico. Parts of the 1700’s plaza still exists today in “Old Town.” Its population of over half a million people within the city limits makes Albuquerque the 32nd largest city in the United States as of 2012. When including the surrounding areas, the population approaches one million. With a national forest and soaring mountains to the east; a military base and Isleta Reservation to the south; and the Sandia Reservation to the north; Albuquerque real estate has been a great investment for most of its history. Yet this large metropolitan area still has some of the charms of its humble beginnings.
If you own any Albuquerque real estate, you can count on an average of 280 days per year of sun in a city that's a mile above sea level. The summers are reasonable as the average daily high in the hottest time of the year is only 96 degrees with a nice, dry climate. But then you get to experience the cool nights in the 70's once the sun sets. We like to brag that you can ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon all winter long, too. This wonderful city's amenities include multiple golf courses, bike/hiking trails, a ski area, museums, a symphony, various theaters, the state’s largest university (The University of New Mexico), several microbreweries and, of course, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta every October. Plus there are many more places to visit within easy driving distances of town - such as Santa Fe, Taos, Acoma Sky City, the Ice Caves, Carlsbad Caverns and more!
After World War II, historic Route 66 and Sandia Laboratories brought thousands to this fair city. The NE Heights is the largest area in the city and is the most populous. But the West Side and Rio Rancho are the fastest growing areas of town since this is where most of the available land is located.
